The "M&C Way" Water Test

Sometimes when a leak is present it is not always easily found. In these instances the roof technician may recommend a water test in order to locate a difficult-to-find roof leak.

Water testing a roof can be a slow and tedious process; patience is a must. This process requires two people, one on the roof and one in the attic (or living space below if no attic exists).

To do it properly, we use a garden hose turned to about half pressure and start at a point directly downhill from the suspected problem area. We do not force water between the shingles or spray the water uphill. This can cause a leak. We stand uphill from the water on the dry part of the roof, to help prevent slipping, then spray an area about 4 ft. wide. We’ll work our way up the roof about two feet at a time. Don’t forget that sometimes the water has to travel  a long distance to show up in the attic. This is where the patience comes in. If  we move the hose uphill too quickly, you will not be able to tell if the leak is from where you had the hose or where you moved it to. It is for this reason that we charge an hourly rate for a water test in order to give you a free estimate on the roofing job.

By conducting a thorough water test the “M&C Way,” we may discover that your roof may not be leaking after all, and that it could be a window or a masonry problem.
